What is matcha

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is traditionally associated with Japanese tea ceremonies. It is made from shade-grown tea leaves, which are stone-ground into a fine powder. The unique growing and processing methods give matcha its vibrant green color and distinctive flavor profile.

Shade Grown

Matcha is produced from tea plants that are shaded from the sun for about 20-30 days before harvest. This process enhances the production of chlorophyll, giving matcha itsintense green color and contributing to its unique flavor

Green Tea Leaves

The tea leaves used to make matcha are typically from the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant used to produce other types of green tea.

Harvesting and Processing

The leaves are handpicked, steamed to halt fermentation, dried, and then stone-ground into a fine powder. This powder is what is used to make matcha.

Ceremonial and Culinary Grades

Matcha comes in different grades, with ceremonial grade being the highest quality, suitable for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Culinary grade matcha is used in cooking and baking.

Flavor Profile

Matcha has a unique, rich, and slightly bitter flavor. The taste can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the matcha, the specific region where it is produced, and how it is prepared.

Versatility

While matcha is traditionally prepared as a frothy, thick tea in Japanese tea ceremonies, it has gained popularity in various culinary applications. It is used in lattes, smoothies, desserts, and even savory dishes. Health Benefits: Matcha is often promoted for its potential health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which are believed to have various health-promoting properties. Additionally, matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that can have a calming effect and may counterbalance the stimulating effects of caffeine
